How to get there

Whether you have your own transport on the Azores or you go by taxi, your starting point to climb Mount Pico has to be Cabeço das Cabras (1.231m / 4.039 ft), since that is where the only official climbing path starts. You can find signs alongside the road, but none are in English so you might want to bring a map or plan your route by using the map below:

The last part of the route to Cabeço das Cabras is a small, unpaved mountain road. There are no clear signs stating that you have arrived at Cabeço das Cabras, but you cannot miss the Visitor Center as seen on the picture below.

From there, you can use the OpenStreetMap below to find your way to the top.

  2. What is the easiest way to get from Madalena to the trail head? Taxi, rental car (parking?), bus?. We are thinking of staying overnight at the top. Thanks, Tyler
-The rental car is only 25 Euros but if a taxi is similar that may be easier. Great website, very helpful!

  3. Good question Tyler, this was also our biggest question when preparing. We got a rental car since it was so cheap and it gave us the flexibility we needed. You can park the car at the visitor center. Very cool that you are staying overnight, let uw know how that was (would love to see a picture on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/picomountainazores). Make sure your tent can handle strong winds, it can get crazy up there! Enjoy!

  4. Hi, thanks for this web with lot of useful information. We are planning go there in 2nd half of September. Now I have a technical question for you. Where did you guys rent the car for the price round 25E? Was it final price included all fees insurance unlimited kms or not? We have not seen any car for less than 40E yet on the common rental web pages.
thanks in advance for sharing your experience

    1. Hi Lucie, thank you and good question. We rented a car at a local company, as we found they are much cheaper and more flexible. We rented a car without insurance and we did not even have to give a credit card before taking the car. They were also flexible on return time. I don't know what the name is of the company, but it was attached to a clothing store and pretty much next to tbis location: http://goo.gl/maps/Dixsr

      Hope this helps!

  5. I have rented a car in Portugal for 7 days and I don't regret it. Everything was perfect as well as service from http://car-traveler.com/locations/car-rental-portugal/

  6. Question: I am 66 years old. If I am fairly athletic am I too old to hike Pico with a few months of training left (like 6 - 8 months?)...

    1. I think with proper training you should be fit enough, but the volcanic rock that you walk on most of the time can be risky for ankles. With proper shoes, it should be feasible.

  7. Should we get a tour guide or you can hiking it without one?

    1. You are allowed to go up alone, but you can also hire a guide. It's up to you! In case you go alone, make sure to read the REGISTRATION section of our website. Have fun!
