Climbing Pico mountain on the Azores

This website contains all information you need to climb Pico mountain on the Azores archipelago. When we were traveling on the Azores ourselves, we searched for information before climbing Pico but found it hard to find all the details we were looking for. After climbing Pico mountain in February 2014, we decided to start this website so that future climbers can find all information in one place. Below you find a short description of what each section in the menu above covers:

  • Pico Mountain: a description of Pico mountain on the Azores, including a video with an amazing view of the volcano from the air.
  • How to get there: learn how to get to the starting point of your Pico climb and use Google Maps to plan your trip.
  • Registration: for your own safety, read this important information about registration before you start climbing Pico. Furthermore, the laws of the local Azores government  about being on Pico mountain are translated from Portuguese to English.
  • The Climb: a detailed description of what climbing Pico mountain is like including photos of the trail.
  • Gear: a list of things you should bring when climbing Pico on the Azores.
  • Weather: current weather conditions on Pico mountain and webcam views of Pico from different islands of the Azores.

We hope you find this website useful and we would love to hear from you on our Facebook page if you miss anything, have questions about climbing Pico mountain or if you simply want to share your own Azores experience!

  1. Excellent informative website Sofia and Jordy! I have climbed Mt Pico many times as a walking guide and it is an incredible experience. I organise holidays to the Azores and many clients do it independently but also some choose to take a mountain guide and we arrange this for them - not everyone is confident on such a high mountain. Anyway, if you need any photos or more info or anyone reading this is looking to visit these spectacular islands, do get in touch. Sarah www.azoreschoice.com

  8. ****THIS IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:****
Portugal is the Biggest Racist country that i have ever lived in. I feared for my life there and i consider myself lucky that my family got out alive! I have never lived in such poverty (Sopas dos Pobres everyday) 40% unemployment rate and 60% of the population earn less than $932 USD per month, and that's considered Middle Class here! Within the European Union it is the worst of the worst place to live.

The bottom line is the bulk of the People in our poor country exist in a brainless comma that is fed by Ignorance, anti-Spanish hate, and severe Racism of pretty much everybody that isn't Portuguese! And, Portugal started the Global Slave Trade in 1441 so it is definitely NOT a safe place for Blacks!!

I found important websites that explain the Severe multi-generational Racism and Hate that exist in Portugal today, and i highly encourage all to read them and spread the word in order to avoid innocent, and desperate people from living or visiting there. Get educated on the Truths about Racist Portugal now.

  12. The Portuguese had a brutal record in the Americas as a colonial power. The most horrendous abuses occurred in the colony of Brazil: natives were enslaved, murdered, tortured and raped in the conquest and early part of the colonial period and later they were disenfranchised and excluded from power. Individual acts of cruelty are too numerous and dreadful to list here. Portuguese Conquistadors in Brazil reached levels of cruelty that are nearly inconceivable to modern sentiments.
